Canna

  • Large tropical herbaceous living several years with a rhizomatous root system. The broad, flat leaves grow out of a stem in a long, narrow roll and then unfurl. The flowers are asymmetric and composed of three sepals and three petals. Typically red, orange, or yellow, or any combination of those colors. The wild species often grow to at least 2–3 m, while the cultivars grow smaller about 60cm. Canna can become invasive in warm regions where it has been introduced, because of the multiplication of the rhizomes. The main pollinators of the flowers are bees, hummingbirds, sunbirds, and bats.
